While searching for inspiration on this wild ride of entrepreneurship in Spain, I stumbled upon the perfect quote: "I once went job hunting and hired myself." Honestly, that’s exactly what happened to me. I fell in love with Spain, but when it came to job options, not so much. So, I did what any artist dreamer with a desire for more would do—I started my own business. And thus, the food fight began.
A food fight, as defined by Wikipedia, is chaotic collective behavior, which sounds an awful lot like my mind on most days. Starting a business? Well, that just added fuel to the fire. Ideas, opportunities, and challenges flying at me from all directions. Entrepreneurship can feel like that: a constant juggling act, especially here in Spain, where navigating bureaucracy and cultural differences is its own special flavor.
From Zero to Entrepreneur
When I moved to Spain in 2010, the thought of starting a business was nowhere on my radar. Honestly, I was just hoping for an exotic man to sweep me off my feet and ride off into the sunset on his Vespa. Turns out that’s more of an Italian thing, but Spain? Spain had other plans for me. It gave me the push (or shove) to dive headfirst into entrepreneurship in Spain, and for that, I’m grateful.
Pasta and Purpose
Growing up, I loved to entertain. My mom, however, thought a more “stable” career was in order, so she gently forced me into accounting. Spoiler alert: I hated it. After a few years of crunching numbers, I decided to quit. The same thing happened when I tried teaching English here in Spain—it just wasn’t my thing. The education system felt unfamiliar, and despite my best efforts, I couldn’t accept it.
That’s when I decided to stop settling for things that didn’t fulfill me. I left the classroom and found my way to the stage. I began writing motivational comedy shows for schools, blending humor and inspiration to make a difference. In many ways, this unexpected turn became the heart of my entrepreneurial journey in Spain.
Entrepreneurship in Spain: Challenges and Choices
Life as an entrepreneur—especially as a foreigner—means making a lot of choices. Spain offers many incredible opportunities, but you also have to contend with endless paperwork, cultural nuances, and sometimes a bit of bureaucracy. But the good news is, the freedom you get to build something from scratch is well worth it.
It’s kind of like deciding what to have for dinner. At first, having too many options seems overwhelming, but when you narrow down what you really want, it all becomes clear. The same goes for entrepreneurship. You could settle for quick and easy, or you could push through the chaos and create something meaningful.
The Open Kitchen (and Business Mindset)
I recently knocked down the walls in my kitchen, creating a big, open space—just like I’ve done with my business. It’s not always smooth sailing, but my journey into entrepreneurship in Spain has opened doors I never thought possible. And just like with a good meal, the key is to savor every step of the way.
So, whether you’re considering starting your own business or you’re just here for the laughs, take it from me: trust yourself, trust the process, and most importantly, never settle for the easy pasta.
