From Audience to the TyF Table: Building a Comedy Community

It’s hard to say exactly when I met Tricia Audette and Fernando García-Torres, the brains (and wild energy) behind TyF COMEDY. It feels like I’ve known them forever—but let’s say it was a 2ish years ago at The School House in Tarragona. They were running an open mic night, the kind of grassroots event where artists get a moment in the spotlight, but more importantly, the community gets a chance to connect.

I walked in with a fun international crowd that night, and by the end of it, I wasn’t just impressed—I was intrigued. During the event, Tricia and Fernando performed two short sketches as a teaser for their Sketch Tapa Show - Gazpacho and Syrup, which I later learned they’ve been taking to audiences for over five years or so. But that night, I just thought: Who are these people with so much energy? And how can I get more of this in my life?

The real hook came later when Tricia invited me to join their web series, System Fóbicos. I didn’t know much about it, except that it was a comedy project with non-traditional twists and turns. What could go wrong, right? Well, everything! Turns out, Ida has a twin—yes, a twin! And while I was failing big-time to figure out their dynamic in real life, I got swept into the hilarious chaos of the show.

But enough about Ida’s twin and my inability to keep up with the plot. Let’s talk about the magic of those early days: Tricia bringing together people for English stand-up nights, Fernando’s rapid-fire comedy leaving my French husband blinking in confusion, and me whispering to him, “You’ll get it… eventually. It’s good for you!” (He’s still adapting to local languages, bless his heart.)

Fast forward a few months, and my role as a regular audience member started to shift. Life threw me a curveball—aka, my previous employer decided it was time for all employees to sign a fijo discontinuo —and suddenly, I had time to wonder: What if I joined this crazy comedy world instead of just watching from the sidelines?

I’m not saying it was an easy decision. Comedy isn’t all laughs and applause. It’s sweat, tears, a lot of brainstorming, and yes, designing branded T-shirts (which, by the way, are amazing). But it’s also connection. It’s sitting around a metaphorical three-legged table with Tricia and Fernando, dreaming about how we can bring more joy to Tarragona.

That table isn’t fancy—it’s small, it wobbles, and it barely seats the three of us. But it works. And now, we’re a three-headed dragon of comedy (and life), breathing fire—not at princesses but at the mundane pains of everyday existence. Our progress might be slow, but we’re doing it the way we believe matters: building comedy communities one laugh, one show, one face-to-face interaction at a time.

The Comedy Grind (and Why It’s Totally Worth It)

The truth? Building a comedy community isn’t glamorous. We’re moving at the pace of a snail who decided to take a coffee break. But there’s a joy in going against the grain, ignoring social media algorithms (mostly), and focusing on real human connections.

That’s what TyF COMEDY is about: the spell of shared laughter, whether it’s at a sketch show, an open mic, or an English or Spanish stand-up night where half the audience is learning the language and the other half is learning how to laugh in it.

What’s Next in the TyF COMEDY Community

Well, for starters, we’ve got Fernando's show coming up on the 15th of this month. My husband is coming along, and I’m curious to see if he’ll finally "digest" Fernando’s AK47-style humor. (Wish him luck!) As for me, I’m not just in the audience anymore—I’m on this wild ride as part of the team - muhahahha.

We’ve got branded shirts, inside jokes, and a mission to make Tarragona laugh louder and longer. If you’re in town, come join us. And if you’re not? Stay tuned—because this three-headed dragon is just getting started - scratch that - continues.

Follow TyF COMEDY on Instagram for upcoming shows. And hey, if you see me at a show, say hi—I’ll probably be wearing one of those branded shirts.
